9/13/09: Naiberi Resort in Eldoret, Kenya
There are no detours in Kenya. We must have driven one road for over three hours without ever seeing a crossing road. That by itself is not a big problem, but when you add road construction to the mix things get interesting. Guess where they route you when the road is blocked off? The ditch next to the road. Ditches here are the bumpiest and dirtiest plots of land you can imagine. Today we must have spent 45 minutes driving through them.

In the middle of nowhere – amidst the dirty ditches, the wide open fields and forests, the poor Kenyan villages – there is an oasis of life as depicted on the O.C. (that’s still popular, I assume?) It’s called the Naiberi Resort, and it’s complete with a beautiful pool, colorful landscaping, a relatively swanky restaurant and bar, nice chalets (hotel rooms for the layperson) and, most importantly, hot showers and real toilets.
In the middle of a long safari (day 2 of 45), this served as a much needed break from the dirt and grime. We hung out at the pool, took hot showers and ate an Indian buffet at the restaurant (which I really enjoyed!). To finish off the day, we had the choice between buying a room (beds start at under $9 per person per night) or staying for “free” in the tents. As you may have guessed, Zhou and I have become quite the rugged, outdoorsy type, so as I write this, we are getting ready to sleep in our tent. Fortunately it is quite nice out, so we have all the thick rain flaps open, making the air much more breathable than last night. Hopefully I can get over my claustrophobia.
